Tips for a successful presentation
1. Structure your presentation clearly
Example, total time 20 min.
Introduction (3–5 min)
- Tell the listeners what your presentation is about and why it is important.
- Present a clear main question or thesis.
Main part (12–14 min)
- Limit your presentation to 3 main points.
- Support your arguments with examples, research or storytelling.
- Strive for variety – the brain can stay focused for about 6–10 minutes at a time.
Conclusion (3–5 min)
- Summarise the key messages.
- Refer back to the main question and provide a clear conclusion.
2. Create effective Powerpoint slides
- Keep it simple – less text, more visuals.
- Follow the 6×6 rule – a maximum of 6 words per line and 6 lines per slide.
- Present one idea per slide – avoid packing in too much information.
- Use large, readable fonts (at least 24 pt).
- Use images and graphic elements instead of blocks of text.
- Make sure you have the rights to use the images in your presentation.
- Keep a consistent design – simple colour palette and same fonts.
3. Engage your audience
- Start with a question, anecdote or surprising statistics.
- Involve the audience through a quick poll or discussion question.
- Avoid reading from your notes.
4. Practical tips for your presentation
- Practice your timing – stay within 20 minutes.
- Feel free to move around the stage and use natural gestures.
- Vary your voice – emphasis and pauses create engagement.
- Deliver a strong conclusion – something memorable!
